# Document kinds: tax invoice, credit note, debit note and more

> Which PINT AE document kinds Alya Books supports, when to use each, and how to pick the transaction type.

Source: /help/en/invoices/document-kinds

Every tax document in Alya Books has a document kind (the PINT AE invoice type code, BT-3) and a transaction type. Both are set in the **Document kind** card of the editor's right panel.

1. Open an invoice, or go to **Invoices** → **New Invoice**.
2. In the right panel, choose the kind from the **Document kind** dropdown. The heading on the paper changes to match.
3. Click **Transaction type** and tick every type that applies: Free trade zone, Deemed supply, Profit margin scheme, Summary invoice, Continuous supply, Disclosed agent billing, Supply through e-commerce, Exports. You can combine them, for example Free trade zone and Exports. Tick none for a standard supply. Types the chosen kind forbids are greyed out with the reason.
4. Use **Fields** to switch optional fields on or off. Fields that PINT AE requires for the chosen kind and its transaction types are locked as mandatory.

| Kind | Code | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Tax invoice | 380 | A standard VAT invoice to a buyer |
| Tax credit note | 381 | Reducing or cancelling an issued invoice |
| Debit note | 383 | Adding to an issued invoice |
| Self-billed invoice | 389 | An invoice the buyer issues on the seller's behalf |
| Self-billed credit note | 261 | A credit note in a self-billing arrangement |
| Out-of-scope invoice | 480 | Supplies outside UAE VAT |
| Out-of-scope credit note | 81 | Correcting an out-of-scope invoice |

Good to know:

- Credit and debit notes must reference the invoice they correct. Start them from the invoice menu (**Create credit note** or **Create debit note**) so the reference, date and original lines are filled in for you.
- A credit or debit note started from an invoice's menu keeps its kind once saved, because its lines and reference were copied from that invoice. A draft whose kind you changed by hand can be changed again.
- Credit notes are generated as a UBL `CreditNote`; all other kinds are a UBL `Invoice` with the matching type code.
- Proformas, quotes and order confirmations are not tax documents and are not in this list. They have their own pages and are never submitted to Taxilla.
- Self-billed kinds (389, 261) appear only when **Self-billing** is on under **Settings → Codes & regions**. On the same page you can switch off kinds and transaction types your company never uses (380 and 381 cannot be switched off); the editor then no longer offers them.
- An out-of-scope invoice (480) or credit note (81) offers only the VAT categories Exempt, Out of scope and Zero rated on its lines, and cannot be a summary invoice, a deemed supply or a profit margin scheme supply. Choosing one of these kinds moves standard-rated lines to Out of scope and unticks those types.
- Pick the transaction types carefully: it sets the transaction flags in the XML that the FTA uses to classify the supply.
